Dr. Mark Baynes, ’88
Congratulations to Dr. Mark Baynes, who was chosen to be our 2025 Joe Magnan Alumnus of the Year! We look forward to hearing him address our graduates at our commencement ceremony on Monday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Ingleside Baptist Church.
A Macon native, Dr. Mark Baynes graduated from Tattnall Square Academy in 1988, having attended from first through twelfth grades. He went on to receive a B.A. degree in Communications from Mercer University. His unique experiences include over thirty years of extensive ministry in North America, Europe, and Africa. Baynes holds a Master of Divinity from Beeson Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry in Christian Worship from Erskine Seminary. Committed to international missions, he serves as an adjunct professor at Ambassador International University in Zambia, teaching undergraduate and master’s courses in Theology of Worship. Additionally, he was an associate pastor in Aberdeen, Scotland, where he and his wife, Dawn, lived for a number of years. Baynes also held positions as a college minister and a worship pastor in the United States.
Dr. Baynes is the author of Worship Under the Influence: Rediscovering the Joy of Acceptable Worship. An accomplished songwriter, musician, and instructor, he has composed and arranged ancient and modern hymns and plays the guitar, mandolin, hammer dulcimer, and piano. Baynes regularly leads worship and presents concerts at his church in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area.
Dr. Baynes is the son of Jack and the late Harriette Baynes. Jack Baynes was an instrumental member of Tattnall Square Academy’s Board of Directors for nine years, including one term as Board Chair. Mr. Baynes worked tirelessly in the service of Tattnall and helped with the design and location of our football, baseball, soccer, and softball fields and ensured that Tattnall’s first lights were added to those fields, which generations of Tattnall athletes and families have enjoyed. Mr. Baynes also designed the preschool building and the current P.E. gym. Additionally, Dr. Mark Baynes’ sister Katy Baynes Smith is a proud 1991 Tattnall and Liberty University alumna.
Congratulations, Dr. Baynes! We are inspired, proud, and honored to call you #tattnallstrong
