Some of the best opportunities to teach students to lead and rally together for a common purpose begin on a team, and some of our students’ best Tattnall Square Academy memories are those shared out on the field. Wins and losses aside, the real benefit of athletics is how it builds good character when approached with a healthy perspective. Through the emotional and strategic negotiation that happens on a team, responsibility is learned and leadership is instilled as students encourage one another on the field. With 20 Region Championships and 11 State Championships, Tattnall Square Academy has a longstanding tradition of playing outstanding football.
“Good Better Best, Never Let it Rest,” a philosophy Coach Chance Jones introduced when he joined the Tattnall family in 2016, exemplifies Tattnall Square Academy’s football team. Being a part of TSA’s football team does not simply mean learning the plays or making the perfect pass. It means making your “good your better and your better your best” on and off the field. On football Friday mornings, the varsity football players and cheerleaders visit elementary classrooms to read and play games with the elementary students. This gives these student athletes the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and develop their character as role models. In addition to putting forth their best effort in the classroom, the players participate in volunteer opportunities throughout our community.
Destin Mack, Georgia Farm Bureau’s Player of the Game, exemplifies these characteristics. “The stats alone speak for Destin’s importance to the program,” Coach Jones said. This season, Mack broke Josh Loosier’s 5 touchdown record by making 6 touchdowns in the game against Wilcox County. He has 118 carries, 1,138 yards, and 9.64 yards per carry on average. Mack has 23 rushing touchdowns for the year. Playing both offense and defense, Mack plays around 100 plays per game, and he is also the Trojans second leading tackler. Mack was recently named Macon Touchdown Club’s Running Back of the Week for his performance against Stratford Academy. He rushed 22 times for 192 yards and a touchdown as well as recording 6 tackles from his defensive back position.
