Joey Hiller has made it clear for years that Tattnall Square Academy is home, and today, Tattnall is pleased to announce that Coach Hiller has been named Director of Athletics.

“It is an absolute honor to be able to serve Tattnall Square Academy and its community in this capacity,” said Hiller.

“I look forward to the opportunity to make a positive impact on the culture of our Athletic Department. I have been devoted to this school since I was hired in 1997, and I intend to continue to pursue excellence in all areas of our Athletic Department and our school.”

Coach Hiller has won over 940 games and 11 State Championships as a head coach at Tattnall. Since taking over as the head baseball coach in 1999, he has won 533 games and ten State Championships.  Hiller took the reins of the softball program when Tattnall made the transition to fast-pitch in 2001 and has added 407 wins and a State Championship title as head coach of that program.

Coach Hiller was also an assistant football coach for six years.  The Trojans played for six State Championships and collected four State titles during this time.

“I attribute a lot of the success we have had in baseball and softball to the six seasons I spent in the Tattnall football program as an assistant coach under Barney Hester.  Hester was really a mentor to me and helped define who I am as a coach. His dedication to a standard of excellence, philosophy of coaching, and his beliefs in routines and traditions have been a huge part of what has helped drive our success in baseball and softball.  That culture is what we plan to instill in all our sports programs, and I am excited about that challenge.”

Hiller’s record for excellence will move into the administrative area, taking the place of Todd Whetsel, who has served as Director of Athletics since 2009. “Todd has done a very good job here and will be missed,” says Hiller.  “Everyone will still see him around Tattnall next year, as his son Austin will be a senior.”

Hiller insists he will give the same energy and relentless pursuit of success to his new position as he has to the baseball and softball programs. “I know I have a lot to learn about the new position, but I look forward to the challenge, and I am dedicated to serving this great school.”

Coach Hiller is married to Cristy Hiller, who has been with Hiller and the Trojans since his first baseball State Championship in 2000.  Their daughter Grace is currently a sophomore at Tattnall.

Coach Hiller will continue to serve as the Head Baseball and Softball Coach.
