To say that Carolyn Smothers Stuart has deep Tattnall roots is an understatement.  The Smothers family began making Tattnall Square Academy their home in 1982.  Their contributions to the math department, Talent Show and Faculty Follies will be ingrained forever in the hearts and minds of many students. In 2001, “Little Carolyn” came home to join her mother, Mrs. Carolyn Smothers, on staff as a math teacher, and now she will be joining another Smothers, her brother Andy, as the recipient of the Joe Magnan Alumnus of the Year award.

An honor graduate, Carolyn ranked #3 in her class in 1995. Even in high school, her classmates knew she would succeed at anything she put her mind to, as she was voted the Most Likely to Succeed senior superlative. As a student, she was involved in Beta Club, Y-Club, Spanish Club, Key Club, and FCA. She played basketball, served as team captain her senior year, and served as editor of the Tattnall Today newspaper, all while maintaining perfect attendance from kindergarten through 12th grade. After graduating in 1999 from Georgia Tech with a BS in Management, she completed her Masters of Education in Mathematics at Georgia Southern University in 2005.  After college, Carolyn spent a year in the business world before answering her true calling: teaching math.  She has been a math teacher at Tattnall on and off since 2001 for a total of 14 years.  During this time, she has received numerous awards from the Chip Davidson Educator of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and Impact Teacher for Baseball/Softball three times, but she is most known by her students as the Junior Class sponsor.  That position involves planning, directing, and choreographing the annual, highly anticipated junior dances for Faculty Follies and Talent Show along with her mother, father, sister, and husband.

Carolyn remained true blue when she married her high school sweetheart, Barry Stuart ‘95. They have two children, William ‘25 and Mary Banks ‘27. The Stuarts are active members of Ingleside Baptist Church, where she has served in the nursery, preschool, and children’s ministries for over 12 years.  In addition to her church activities, her hobbies include watching her children play ball and attending any and all TSA events or games.

Carolyn Stuart’s contribution and impact on the Tattnall community is immeasurable. We look forward to the commencement services when our 2020 Joe Magnan Alumnus of the Year,  Carolyn Smothers Stuart, addresses the class of 2020.
