Dear Tattnall Square Academy Family,

At a faculty meeting today, Coach Barney Hester informed the Tattnall faculty and staff that he will be leaving Tattnall at the end of the school year to accept the head football coach position at Howard High School.  This appointment will be confirmed by the Bibb County Board of Education in its meeting tonight.  We want to make certain that the members of our school family hear this directly from the school and not simply read about it in tomorrow’s newspaper.

For the past 31 years, Coach Hester has been one of the public faces of Tattnall.  Coach Hester’s record as head football and track coach and his work as the Athletic Director when he first came is indicated by the number of state and regional championships won in football, track, and all sports where he was instrumental in nurturing coaches.  Coach Hester’s impact on the young men and women who have passed through the school during his tenure cannot truly be measured.  In addition, during a time of transition, our Board of Directors asked Coach Hester to accept the job of acting head of school until a permanent head could be chosen.  What he anticipated to be a short term position ended up lasting 10 years during which he continued to serve as football coach as well as leading the school.  He was finally able to convince the Board to allow him to go back to his first love, and for the past four years he has coached football and track again, as well as teach drivers’ education and physical education.  In addition he has been at the forefront of every public function, continuing to help build the school’s reputation in the community.

Obviously we will miss Coach Hester and wish him the very best as he moves to his new challenge.  As we say good bye to Coach Hester, we will also begin our immediate search for our next head football coach.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brenda Shuman-Riley

Head of School
