In addition to the 24 recently renovated classrooms in the lower school our students have the advantage of their own music, science, computer, and art labs. The elementary science lab is an inquiry based hands-on approach to teaching science. The goal of the science lab is to encourage young minds to become thinkers and problem solvers as we investigate the world around them. Primary students, grades K5-3, come to the science lab for a 30-minute class period once every two weeks, while upper elementary students have science lab once a week for 45 minutes. During these times, students are involved in hands-on investigations using the scientific method and learning the process of science.
Some classroom activities include discovering the difference between chemical and physical changes, sorting rocks, and identifying minerals in rocks. Primary students investigate insects, the life cycle of the mealworm, and plants. Upper elementary students dissect owl pellets and squid. Students also observe the anatomy and behavior of live earthworms and crayfish. The classroom pets Gideon (a leopard gecko) and Cookie & Cocoa (rabbits) help students during their study of animal classification. Students also celebrated life in May as they incubated chicken eggs and hatched baby chicks. Through these hands-on, minds-on activities, we strive to nurture a love of learning as well as a love of science.
Discovery Program
Discovery class is an enrichment program offered to gifted students in grades 2 - 6. Qualification is based on the following three criteria: 1. a score in the 95th percentile or above in key areas of a standardized test, 2. a teacher recommendation, and 3. high score on an individually given intelligence test. Once admitted to the program, a student must maintain a 90 or above average at the end of each grading period on the report card. A twenty-dollar fee for supplies is required.
Curriculum is centered on challenging topics and subjects. Students are expected to use higher-level thinking. Examples of studies are: Architecture of Macon, National Parks, Current News events, Brain Challenges, Careers, Around the World in Eighty Days, Elections and Presidents, Olympics, Endangered Species, etc. Units of study are culminated with special projects and field trips. Each grade level meets once a week.
